Solo Lady Traveller 40+?
Solo travel can be daunting. You can take your chances and book a regular package holiday (usually with a hefty single supplement), and find yourself at a table for one in a sea of couples. Book a typical tourist trip and you'll probably spend the whole time on your own.
Another alternative is a special interest holiday. You could learn to paint, spend your days cycling or recharge your batteries at a yoga retreat. The trouble is that this type of break is often held in a remote location with little to do, and sometimes chores like cooking are thrown in. Just because you share an interest like walking, does not mean that your idea of a good time will also be shared.
Dedicated solo travel companies mainly offer vanilla experiences, as they want to appeal to as wide a group of people to generate economies of scale. Guests can be pressurised into taking part in a full schedule of activities and end up with little time to relax. Often there is an extremely wide age spectrum and an imbalance between the sexes, which can create issues when it comes to socialising.
Independent solo travel is very rewarding, but the risk is high. Navigating transport in an unfamiliar place can be extremely difficult, especially in a foreign language. It is hard to avoiding straying into dangerous areas and you need to be very wary about being out after dark. Even some hotel rooms are not places of safety any more.
